“It’s a sad thing to see: children just 14 or 15 years old have started smoking in the streets and alleys of the camp — this is a social loss and a moral digression.” These words came from Abu Ibrahim (age 40), who foresees a future disaster for a rising generation if the children continue down this path. These children need social awareness, taught by friends and family.
He continued, “They smoke in the alleys of the camp secretly because they are afraid of their parents, and they keep it secret because they know it’s bad and society disapproves. We need to discourage these habits through the efforts of the community and the children’s parents. Unfortunately, the increasing amount of child labor is the major reason many of them are smoking. We don’t know the future consequences of these bad habits that have become rooted in our children.”
Abu Hassan (in his fifties) said, “This problem cannot be tolerated, but there must be a clear and firm decision from the children’s families, and it must be combated any way possible; many parents don’t know what their children are doing behind their backs.” He added, “Childhood should be about playing games and looking for places of entertainment, not searching for cigarettes scattered on the ground. They’re not aware it, but this isn’t only socially dangerous but also threatens the health of the children.”
Abu Hassan said the parents were to blame for the spread of this habit, as they must follow all their children’s behavior closely — no matter the child’s age — because children easily stray down the wrong path.
“The Road” attempted to speak to a child about the reason he smokes (he works on a cart, transporting vegetables), but he refused to talk and ran away: this reaction shows that his family doesn’t know he smokes.
Omar (age 17) said, “the main reason these children started smoking is that they left schools and started working, and some of them believe that it’s a kind of entertainment.”
While writing a report, “The Road” saw a child smoking, and he agreed to talk to us but refused to give his name. When asked why, his answer was shocking. He said, “I used to go out with my friends to check the price of a pack of cigarettes, then we’d split the cost and smoke in one of the streets of the camp. Then we started running away from school to find a place with no one in it, and it became a permanent habit.”
We went back to the streets, where Abu Musab told us that in his opinion, shops owners should not sell cigarettes to children unless they know them well and know they’re buying the cigarettes for their parents. Also, the father must monitor his son’s actions, confront bad behavior, and keep watching and smelling his son to make him worried that he might be caught if he starts smoking.
These children’s lives are threatened by cigarettes. Cigarette smoke fills the lungs of children, and the negligence of parents and shop owners are to blame. They must have a conscience, and fear for the generation to come.
